The minecraft.timashley.me minecraft server has been getting really fun lately. Lots of new users and project going on. New towns using the Towny server mod have been created and we even found a stronghold!

We've successfully been running the latest version, 1.0, with all of our bukkit plugins, for the past month with no issues what-so-ever.

What is Plowshare?

Plowshare is a command-line (CLI) download/upload tool for popular file-sharing websites (aka Hosters). With Plowshare, you will be able to download or upload files and manage remote folders and link deletion. It runs on Linux/BSD/Unix operating systems.

In this article, i will show you how to install Plowshare on a Ubuntu Linux Server and download a file from Megaupload or Rapidshare.

Synchronet Bulletin Board System Software

... is a free software package that can turn your personal computer into your own custom online service supporting multiple simultaneous users with hierarchical message and file areas, multi-user chat, and the ever-popular BBS door games.

Synchronet development began as a personal hobby in 1990 for single-tasking MS-DOS compatible computers and Hayes compatible modems. The program was sold commercially from 1992-1996 after which time it was released (with source code) for both the 16-bit DOS and 32-bit OS/2 platforms to the public domain and development by the author was ceased.

In November of 1999, the author found a renewed interest in further developing Synchronet, specifically for the Internet community, embracing and integrating standard Internet protocols such as Telnet, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IRC, NNTP, and HTTP. Synchronet has since been substantially redesigned as an Internet-only BBS package for Win32 and Unix-x86 platforms and is an Open Source project under continuous development.

Synchronet Version 3.1x for Win32 and Unix (Intel-x86 architecture) can be previewed on Vertrauen (Home of Synchronet BBS Software).

In this article, i walk you through installing the Synchronet BBS Software on a Ubuntu Server.

System notification emails

Continuing in part off of my last Ubuntu Server article, "The Perfect Server", I decided that i wanted the server to send me emails updating its status with me. If the HD space gets low, the RAM is all used up, services go down, or even i lose internet at my house while im out and about, i get a nice email from my server notifying me of the problem (at least when my inet comes back online).

What better way to top this off than with use of a gmail account that i already owned and used?

In this article, i will walk you through installing the following along side your postfix installation:

Self signed SSL certfication (don't want anyone being nosey!)

Apticron - A nice set of scripts that will execute 'apt-get udpate' and email you the results

Webmin - One of the best web based management consoles for head-less servers. Has a great system notification setup, along with many many many other goodies.

What is the perfect linux server?

The perfect linux server to me is something that can maintain all of my downloads, whatever it may be (Torrent, newsgroups, soulseek, ect) that can be controlled and accessed from VPN, LAN or Internet via HTTP... and have it all running when it boots up! (That was the hardest part actually)

Rouge DHCP Server?

Rogue DHCP servers are those DHCP servers that are misconfigured or unauthorized unknowingly or those that are configured with a malicious intent for network attacks. Either be the case the impact on clients that are serviced by the rogue DHCP servers are critical. That is the clients would experience network access problems due to rogue DHCP server leasing incorrect IP addresses & incorrect options to the client. Security threats are caused when malicious user with rogue DHCP server can spread bad network parameters and thereby sniff the traffic sent by the clients. There are also certain Trojans like DNS-changing that uses a compromised machine in the network to pollute the network by installing rogue DHCP servers on the machine. Rogue detection tool is a GUI tool that checks if there are any rogue DHCP servers in the local subnet.

Following are the features with this tool:

1. The tool can be run one time or can be scheduled to run at specified interval.

2. Can be run on a specified interface by selecting one of the discovered interfaces.

3. Retrieves all the authorized DHCP servers in the forest and displays them.

4. Ability to validate (not Authorize in AD) a DHCP server which is not rogue and persist this information

5. Minimize the tool, which makes it invisible. A tray icon will be present which would display the status.
